Experiences of online hate and abuse among women in politics

Published: 14 July 2025

Being online gives politicians space to share their messages, connect with constituents, and engage with political issues. But it can also expose them to online abuse and hate some of which is specifically targeted at women.

Using a survey and individual depth interviews, Ofcom engaged with 23 women currently or formerly serving as MPs in the UK Parliament, to hear about the hate and abuse they have faced online. This qualitative research was conducted so that Ofcom, as the Online Safety regulator, could learn about these lived experiences directly from these individuals.
