Ofcom has today published the provisional conclusions of its assessments of the BBC’s plans to launch four new DAB+ stations and extend the hours of Radio 5 Sports Extra.

The BBC is proposing changes to its radio services, by launching four new DAB+ music radio stations; and to extend the broadcasting hours of Radio 5 Sports Extra, changing it from a part-time service offering live sports only, to a service broadcasting daily from 9am-7pm.

Ofcom has published a letter to the BBC, expressing concern about serious failings in the production of its programme, Gaza: How to Survive a Warzone. The letter sets out Ofcom's expectations of the BBC's investigation.

We are providing stakeholders with an opportunity to comment on this initial assessment and seek initial views to understand how stakeholders consider the launch of the new DAB+ stations and the changes to Radio 5 Sports Extra could affect them if they go ahead. Stakeholders will have an opportunity to comment on our draft conclusions for both proposals before we reach a final decision.

Ofcom must consider the impacts of the BBC’s activities on fair and effective competition.

Today marks the fiftieth anniversary of the launch of Ceefax, the BBC’s teletext service that allowed viewers to access text-based information on their TV sets, and which blazed a trail for the on-screen services we use today.
