Ofcom has commissioned a survey with UK internet users aged 16+ who self-reported to access pornographic content online to understand their experiences of accessing such content and passing any age checks if encountered, as well as their attitudes towards proving their age on adult sites, and how important different factors are to encourage them to comply.
We first carried out this quantitative research in August/September 2023 with YouGov to expand on our knowledge following the study about adult users' attitudes towards age verification on adult sites in 2022, with a focus this time in trust on age assurance measures as well as other identified knowledge gaps (e.g. whether VPN or the incognito browsing mode is used when accessing pornographic content online).
In December 2024, the survey was repeated with minor changes to the questionnaire.
